On Day 1 of the class, Nila Chamberlain began with an introductory demonstration of basic materials and techniques, including review of types of paper used in watercolor, discussion of how transparent watercolor is and how it is applied, and brush technique for watercolor.  Each student received a basic watercolor kit and practiced brush technique for transparent watercolor washes. Students taped down watercolor paper on two boards, sketched in pencil on the prepared boards, and did two separate gradient washes in the second hour.
