Judge Linda Bruening reviewed the entries for the En Plein Air Exhibition on Wednesday, July 12, the day before the Opening Reception. The artwork was judged blind, each piece identified only by number.
"It's always an excitement and a joy for an artist when someone appreciates your work. Even if you don't get a ribbon, just sit back and appreciate it. Remember the fact that artists don't stop learning, they continue to learn more from their work and the better they get, the more involved they become. They find their own style, their own way of working, and it just kind of multiplies from there.

You have some very nice work here. Presentation-wise your artists need to be aware of professional presentation, just like the artists that meet at the league. My comments on the individual pieces also cover presentation." - Linda Bruening

Linda's love of art and nature began as a young girl in Iowa and has continued ever since. She earned a BAE degree from Wichita State University and spent the next several years in Virginia teaching high school art students. She has lived in Europe and Panama and moved to North Carolina in 2006. She has studied with Kate Worn, Maggie Siner, Chris Groves, and Barbara Jaenicke.
Linda chooses to work with oils and paints her subjects from unusual levels, angles, or perspectives in a contemporary representational style. Her interpretation of light, shadows and reflections give her paintings a unique quality. Recently, her brush work and stylistic approach have become more abstract. She feels that "a painting should represent an artist's interpretation of a visceral moment using color, shapes, and brush work working in either a representational or abstract style".
Her solo exhibitions include From My Perspective in 2011, Intertwined the Soul and the Brush in 2017, and On Refection in 2022. In October of 2023 she will join four other artists at the Artist League of the Sandhills in Aberdeen, NC with a show Total Abstraction. All of her solo shows were well received.
Through the years Linda has won several awards, ribbons and acclaim for her work and is represented in both private and college collections. She can be reached at the Artists League of the Sandhills or at lindabrueningartist@gmail.com.
