Awards for Artist’s Choice Exhibition
Juror James Bass, Ed.D, visited the Robeson Guild House and reviewed the entries for the Artist’s Choice Exhibition on Wednesday, May 22. The theme for Artist’s Choice is creativity, and how each individual artist chooses to express and share their work with us. Several artists mentioned that they were working on something special – we could hardly wait to see what they created.
Bass, Executive Director of the Givens Performing Arts Center at UNC-Pembroke, writes a monthly column for The Robesonian. His photography appears in books and magazines, on album covers, and on social media pages of artists Waylon Jennings and The Doobie Brothers. Awards he has received include the 2018 N.C. Arts Council Emerging Artist, the 2020 Gold Nyx Award, and the Telly Award in 2021 for producing a concert video for pianist Mark Andersen. For the judging, each piece of artwork was judged blind, each piece identified only by number. Dr. Bass awarded First, Second, and Third placements and two Honorable Mentions.
The Artist’s Choice Exhibition Opening Reception was Thursday, May 23rd, featuring music by Susie Swenson on the piano, and light refreshments sponsored by Marilyn and Larry Pope.
The Featured Artist Gallery during the Artist’s Choice Exhibition showcases artworks created by students of Shantonia Chavis-Bullard. Be sure to stop in at the Guild House soon to see the work of these talented young artists!

Spring Festival, A Beautiful Exhibition
April 25 – May 9, 2024

With the Special Robeson County Artists Exhibition now open at the Contemporary Art Museum Raleigh, we are turning our heads homeward with the Spring Festival Exhibition at the Guild House. The theme for Spring Festival is simply Spring, that beautiful time of year here in North Carolina, full of sunshine, flowers – and pollen, but let’s not dwell on that! Stop in and see how each artist interpreted the season. There are oils, acrylics, collages, watercolor, and even a needlework piece representing the fiber-arts, a first for one of our exhibitions!
Judge Babette Augustin was the juror for this exhibition – and we were all pleased to have her join us at the reception! Speaking of which, I hope you all had the chance to hear accordion player Betty Fisher fill the air with music! It was a very special evening.
The Spring Festival Exhibition opened April 25th with the reception, an update on the Robeson County Artists Exhibition at CAM, and recognition of donors and Artist awards. This exhibition was a little shorter than most – the Spring Festival Exhibition ran through May 9, 2024.
Even if you missed the Spring Festival Exhibition, there is always something new to at the Guild House, including in the shop! Donna Freeman has an array of new glass art pieces ranging from $10 on up, M.M. Andrson has some lovely cards just right for those special people in your life, and there are many lovely original boxes by Denise Siracusa, and an array of paintings, pottery, and carvings by local artists – even some books.
See you soon!
