Jim’s exciting new class is scheduled to start tomorrow, but we’ve run into some hiccups, may have to reschedule. We will let those of you who have registered know well before – Don’t Worry! The good new for those of you who were planning to but didn’t, you have a chance to get in after all – just click here and reserve your spot: Class 06.23.2026 – Natural Chair Caning with Jim Tripp (3-class bundle) – Robeson Art Guild.
To remind everyone, this is a chance to transform and restore that treasured vintage furniture you’ve always wanted by recaning the worn chair seats. You’ll learn the old seat-weaving way, using traditional techniques with natural cane, NOT using a stretched pre-woven modern seat. Check below for information on how to measure your chair and where to get the kit(s) you will need. Please contact us if you have any questions.
The caning class will take several sessions and you will also need to work at home to complete your project. Jim suggests that you view this YouTube video at home, so you have a good understanding of the process and know what to expect: https://youtu.be/A5IRBuwONnA?si=IXAHzHPzxAnWu6rX
By the way, when you register, we ask that you pick your preferred time for class, so we can accommodate your schedule if at all possible. No guarantee, but we will try our best and keep you informed. We do reserve the right to form classes as needed.
Thanks for your interest! Jim is looking forward to seeing you soon!

Notes on Materials and Kits
The materials needed for the class are specific to the project you wish to complete. Therefore, materials are NOT provided in the class tuition fee. Kits can be purchased online thru Amazon or directly from HH Perkins.
To determine which size is right for your chair, measure the diameter of the chair holes, and measure the distance between the holes, center to center. Select the size that matches your chair based on the size chart provided with the online kit description. If your measurements don’t match the chart exactly, the diameter of hole is more important than the center-to-center measurement. Kits normally include a bundle of natural strand cane (rattan peel) for stated woven seat sizes and may include tools and/or pegs and instructions for a project.
Kits: Jim recommends a kit of supplies from H H Perkins. Select the cane size you need for your project. Click here to select and order your kit(s): https://hhperkins.com/…/strand-cane/products/caning-kits.
Kits are also available thru Amazon. If you decide to order from Amazon, look for kits with stands and binder cane, product or chairs that have holes around the perimeter of the seat, NOT pre-made webbing.
